Our philosophy

"Growing up is recovering the seriousness with which we played as children." F. Nietzsche

The Wheel aims to create a social, philosophical, creative, and transcultural space for multilingual children. We want to give them the opportunity to develop and combine their creative expressiveness with their linguistic ability, interacting through music, body language, theater, and art. We make this possible in our kindergartens, as well as in our workshops.

"For us, The Wheel was a symbol of meeting and encounter. It is circular, implies movement, and is what makes a structure work or function."

Nuevo Logo La Rueda.jpeg

Our origins and logo

La Rueda was founded in 2015, five years after the establishment of the children's program A la Rueda, a Spanish-language interdisciplinary children's art workshop that has been running for 10 years at WUK (Werkstätten und Kulturhaus), where our NGO Großes Schiff is based. This experience inspired the motivation to continue putting down roots in the educational field. The workshop at WUK, like the school, arose from the desire to create a social, philosophical, creative, and transcultural space for multilingual children and their families, where they could interact through music, dance, theater, and visual arts. This led to the opportunity to develop and combine their creative expression with their linguistic ability. From the need to meet and interact with different Spanish-speaking cultures and their reciprocal learning, thus giving us the opportunity to rediscover and differentiate ourselves through play and creative social interaction. La Rueda is the shortened name of our program for children and their families on WUK, A la Rueda, and the name that the audience gave us once the program began. A la Rueda, a wheel, was the name of a radio program for children and their families in southern Argentina, which existed during the childhood of the friend with whom I started the program. The name seemed appropriate because it fit the program's concept: an annual cycle of encounters, composed of music, dance, visual arts, and space, that would be repeated and would never stop rolling. For us, the wheel was also a symbol of reunion and encounter with different Spanish-speaking cultures and their mutual learning, giving us the opportunity to rediscover and differentiate ourselves through play and creative social interaction. This is something we also aimed for with this program. It symbolizes movement; it's circular. It can be thought of as the value of the four beats of a whole note, the first rhythmic figure in music, just as there are also four seasons. And it's what makes a structure tick or operate. And when I thought of the image of a wheel, I was immediately reminded of a quote by Nietzsche from his book, Thus Spoke Zarathustra: "The child is innocence and forgetfulness, a wheel that spontaneously turns, a holy saying yes." A yes to play, to curiosity, to questioning and exploration. Then we felt certainty, and thus the search for a name was concluded. Then came the task of creating a logo that would visually represent us, and in doing so, my friend, who is an artist with experience in graphic design, tested ideas, inquired, and explored a bit. Together, we concluded that this current logo was the right one: a wheel with three colors like brushstrokes representing the three artistic disciplines we wanted to work with and create: music, dance, visual arts, and space. We unified visual arts and space as their own artistic disciplines because, for us, it was important to differentiate between just visual arts and visual arts transferred to or related to space.

Routine according to the seasons

We base our annual development on the seasons of the year.

During spring and summer we mainly spend the day in the Augarten, for walks and excursions or in our Bürgerinnengarten orchard next to Filmarchiv (Augarten).

From 8:30 to 9:30 we have the possibility to have breakfast freely.

Then we make our round of the day where we greet, sing, dance and talk about ourselves and our day.

At 12 noon we have lunch and then we relax for a while so that we can enjoy a cozy quiet hour during which some of the children sleep.

If those of us who do not sleep need more outdoor time, then we go to the Park or we play in our playground.

In the fall and winter we also go out a lot.

A

Green pedagogy

We feel very fortunate to live in Vienna, a city that offers us many opportunities for activities and an outdoor program based on green pedagogy. We believe in living with nature, not just experiencing it, so we move most of our activities to an open, natural setting. In this way, our children learn from a very early age to relate to the planet they live on, feeling empathy for its creatures and developing their motor skills beyond the usual.

B

Continuous learning for green education

We have a team committed to continuous learning. At La Rueda, we offer courses and materials so that employees and volunteers can continue their training in pedagogy. We also research our beliefs, publishing interesting articles on biophilia, the Montessori method, and childhood multilingualism, for example.

C

Reggio Methodology

An experiential teaching method that involves the commitment of all members of the educational community to children's education, helping them develop closer ties of communication with the world. The Reggio Emilia Methodology, named after the Italian town where it originated in the 1970s, is an innovative teaching system. It was developed by educator Loris Malaguzzi, who introduced art into preschools, advocating that students learn through observation and ultimately develop their own creative projects. Reggio Emilia principles emphasize "the pedagogy of speaking through the pedagogy of listening." Therefore, it is an educational philosophy developed by those involved in children's daily education: parents, educators, teachers, artists, and the children themselves. The natural environment is incorporated, to the extent possible, into all educational activities, and languages are a tool for the development and understanding of the world around them.

D

Spanish and German in our kindergartens

Learning German and Spanish simultaneously, merging cultures, expressions, visions, and ideals. Comparing identities and developing one's own. Enriching vocabulary and communication skills. Opening doors to new worlds. Reflecting on one's own family constellation, as a source of inspiration. Modular workshops for learning German and Spanish. Language and Literature in both languages. From the study of grammar to literary development. Teamwork, language projects. Creating stories, narratives, songs, and plays.

E

Philosophy with children

Thinking through dialogue, collaborative research, the exchange of ideas and thoughts, all based on personal suggestions provoked by reading stories and asking questions, such as: Where do people come from? What is a friend? This is how a topic begins to develop. Our philosophical discussions are characterized by their exchange, by their development of communication skills, dialogue, and listening skills, by sharing values and ideals, as well as a method and a specific attitude of respect for others and freedom.
